​On 24 June 2026, a powerful earthquake struck northeastern Venezuela.

While the headlines focused on damaged buildings and infrastructure, many of the hardest-hit rural communities remained largely invisible.

For many of us who have dedicated our lives to Venezuelan cocoa, watching these events unfold from different parts of the world was heartbreaking. Yet something remarkable happened almost immediately.

​

Within hours, people across Venezuela and around the world mobilised to rescue, support, feed, shelter and reconnect those affected. It was a powerful reminder of how united Venezuelans can be in times of need. At the same time, cocoa professionals across the globe began asking how they could help from wherever they were.

​

Before long, a WhatsApp group had formed, bringing together Venezuelans from every corner of the cocoa sector, regardless of where they now live.

​

Some of us had never met in person, yet within days we were working side by side, each taking on a role, united by a deep love for our country and a shared commitment to supporting the communities affected.

 

Everyone asked the same question:

"How can we help?"

​

There was no hierarchy. No competition. No concern about who represented which company or organisation. Only a shared determination to support the cocoa communities that have given so much to all of us.

​

One of the first decisions the group made was an important one: rather than rushing aid without fully understanding the real needs, we would first listen. We wanted to ensure that every contribution reached the communities where it could have the greatest impact, and that every decision would be made responsibly, transparently and with the people on the ground.

This collective response reminded us that cocoa has always been about much more than beans or chocolate. It is about people. It is about relationships built over decades. It is about families, traditions and communities that continue to protect extraordinary landscapes and one of the world's richest cocoa heritages.

Perhaps the greatest gift to emerge from this difficult moment has been the rediscovery of our own community.

​

Many of us had crossed paths throughout our careers without ever truly working together. Others knew each other only by name. The earthquake became the catalyst that connected us, creating a network built on trust, generosity and a shared purpose.

​

As Venezuelans, we often hear about the challenges our country faces. Yet moments like these remind us of something equally true: when we organise ourselves, set aside individual interests and work towards a common goal, we are capable of extraordinary things.

​

The cocoa sector has demonstrated exactly that.

What began as an emergency response is becoming something much bigger: a global network of Venezuelan cocoa professionals committed not only to supporting communities in times of crisis, but also to strengthening the future of Venezuelan cocoa together.

​

This is only the beginning.

The earthquake reminded us how fragile life can be. But it also reminded us how resilient people are.

​

Perhaps the strongest foundation we have is not built with concrete.

It is built with community...
